Steps for Confronting a Dishonest Business Safely
Follow these steps if you believe you've been scammed by a business
- Document everything. Save all receipts, contracts, emails, text messages, and other communications.
- Contact the business directly. Give them a chance to resolve the issue before escalating.
- Put it in writing. Send a formal complaint letter via certified mail with return receipt requested.
- Contact your credit card company. If you paid by credit card, you may be able to dispute the charge.
- File a complaint with regulatory agencies. Report to the BBB, FTC, and your state's attorney general.
- Consider legal action. Small claims court may be an option for disputes under a certain dollar amount.
